How to Get on ASP

alt.smokers.pipes is a Usenet group. There is a very good amount of information about Usenet and how to get connected to it; however, they may be a little too technical for most of us. One of the most popular how-to documents is Usenet News HOWTO, which is, basically, a whole book on the subject.

Luckily for us, things are easier each year. Now you can read and post to Usenet groups using Google Groups. It is very easy to use. However, many people find it lacking of several desirable features, such as killfiles.

The most preferred way to connect to Usenet is using a newsreader.

Connect to Usenet using a Newsreader

You need two things to connect to Usenet:

  1. A newsreader
  2. A news server

Windows Users already have Outlook Express, which is the most commonly used newsreader; although we do not hesitate to recommend the Thunderbird email client, which also can read newsgroups.

Most ISPs (such as AOL or Earthlink) have their own news server. The information is usually found in the help files for your ISP, although you may have to call them and ask what it is. News servers are better known as NNTP servers.

Your news reader will want to know the address of your NNTP server (which is usually something like news.someisp.com), and usually your username and password (which is probably the same as the one you use to log on to the Internet.)

The first thing to do once you set up a newsreader is to download the full list of news groups available on your server. Your news reader will probably do this automatically. After that, just go through the list to find alt.smokers.pipes, subscribe to the group, and download the messages.
